Igniting STEM Curiosity: Space Systems Command STEM Outreach Returns to Yokota
YOKOTA, Japan – For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC) STEM Outreach team returned to Yokota Air Base, bringing hands-on space science learning to Yokota West Elementary School and Joan K. Mendel Elementary School. The return visit reflects a growing commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education across the Department of War Education Activity Pacific East District.
Launched in 2021, the SSC STEM Outreach program is designed to ignite curiosity through interactive, age-appropriate lessons centered on space and rocketry. Building on the success of last year’s visit, this second year allowed students and educators to further connect classroom learning with real-world applications while engaging with U.S. Space Force Guardians and civilian STEM professionals.
At Yokota West Elementary, students from prekindergarten through 5th grade participated in the program, while Joan K. Mendel Elementary focused on students in 3rd through 5th grade. Across both schools, students explored the fundamentals of rocket science, learning how rockets launch, how satellites reach orbit, and how physics and mathematics influence spaceflight.
“This event brings science out of the classroom and helps our students engage in real-world applications of both science and mathematics standards,” said Dr. Neva Wise, Instructional Systems Specialist. “We plan to extend this experience by having students engage in the Engineering Design Process to adjust and retest their rockets.”
A highlight of the visit was the hands-on rocket activity, where students designed, built and launched their own paper rockets. Students tested designs, adjusted fins and nose cones, and eagerly observed how small changes affected performance. Space Force Guardians supported the launches, measured distances, and encouraged students to think critically about engineering choices and outcomes.
The experience extended beyond launches, as students participated in question-and-answer sessions with Guardians, asking about careers in the Space Force, the math and science needed for space-related fields, and how satellites are protected in orbit. Each participant left with their rocket, new knowledge, and a sense of pride, earning the title of Junior Guardian.
SSC STEM Outreach leaders emphasize that early exposure to STEM is essential for building tomorrow’s innovative and resilient workforce. With its second successful year at Yokota and plans for broader district-wide expansion, the program continues to turn curiosity into inspiration: launching young learners toward a future connected to science, engineering and space exploration.
