YOKOTA, Japan – Mendel Elementary School proudly kicked off the Month of the Military Child with a meaningful welcoming ceremony on April 6, honoring the resilience and sacrifices of military-connected students. The celebration began with remarks from COL Richard McElhaney and Dr. Jacqueline Ferguson, who warmly welcomed students and emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting military children within our school community.

The festivities continued with a high-energy Color Run that filled the campus with excitement, smiles, and school spirit. One of the highlights of the week was the Purple Up Talent Show, a student-centered event that showcased both creativity and confidence. Organized by Ms. Cunningham, the show featured 28 student participants and a wide range of impressive performances, including singing, dancing, a Chicken Little puppet act, a ventriloquist performance, the Magical Purple Up Trio, comedy skits, cup stacking, a science act, and more. The variety and enthusiasm on display reflected the unique talents and courage of our military students.

The impact of the talent show resonated strongly with families. One parent, Mr. Conrad Dawes, shared the following message of appreciation:

“I had the joy of watching you in action with our children this afternoon—an absolute pleasure and privilege to witness. The amount of dedication, creativity, and care that goes into producing an event of this caliber does not go unnoticed. On behalf of our family and the many families in attendance today, thank you. The smiles on those children’s faces said everything. I had the opportunity to speak with several parents afterward, and the sentiment was unanimous—everyone walked away thoroughly impressed.”

The week concluded with a spirited Field Day, bringing students together for teamwork, fun, and camaraderie.

Our military students are the reason we are here. We celebrate them every day, and we are grateful for opportunities like these special events to honor their resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit. Mendel Elementary is proud to stand beside our military families and to recognize the strength and contributions of our incredible students—this month and always.
